    COMPUTER TYPES
  • Supercomputers: very complex calculations (weather forecasting, quantum physics)

  • Mainframe Computers: bulk data processing (large organizations)

  • Mini Computers: used by larger companies

  • Microcomputers / personal computers

  • - Desktop computer
    - Laptop
    - Work Station
    - Tablet computer
    - Hand Held Computer

    Supercomputers
Supercomputers are often purpose-built for just one organisation. The fastest supercomputer in the world yet (June 2009) is the Roadrunner system at DOE’s Los Alamos National Laboratory. Second is the Jaguar system installed at the DOE’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory. DOE is the acronym for (US)Department of Energy . IBM is building another supercomputer for the DOE called the 'Sequoia'. This supermachine should be ready in 2012 and will have a maximum speed of 20 Petaflops - the equivalent of more than 2 million laptops. IBM is the most important manufacturer of supercomputers. Other manufacturers are Cray Inc, Sun Microsystems and Bull SA.

    Mainframe computers
The first mainframes between 1955-1980 were enormous computers with the size of a room. All units were hung into frames. Nowadays the mainframes are more compact and used for bulk data processing such as banking and insurance businesses. Hundreds of users can use the computer simultaneously. IBM dominate the mainframe computer market with a 90% market share. Other mainframe manufacturers are Unisys, Bull, Fujitsu, Hitachi, and NEC.

    Fastest Internet connection
  • 2007: A 75-year-old woman in Sweden has a 40 gigabits-per-second fiber-optic connection. Her son - a network specialist - and the head of the Karlstad city network unit installed the connection.
  • 2008: Researchers of Bell Labs in France managed to transfer data over a distance of 2550km at a speed of 16.4 Terrabytes per second.
  • 2009: Scientists at Bell Labs made a new system which achieved speeds of 100 Petabits per second. One Petabyte is is 1000 terabytes. The new technique includes 155 lasers, each operating at a different frequency and carrying 100Gbit/s each.
